GatorSauce: Bold Enough to Ask
Share
I met a man named Maurice — though most people know him as “GatorSauce.”
Maurice had recently been given an opportunity by a local business owner to use a side parking lot to wash cars and earn money for himself. What stood out to me was that Maurice didn’t simply want handouts. He wanted an opportunity. He wanted to work.
The business owner told Maurice he could use the space if he showed up the next morning with his own signs and supplies as proof that he was serious and willing to put in the effort.
So I picked Maurice up, and we headed to Walmart to get what he needed to start fresh.
As we walked through the store, we talked about much more than car wash supplies. We talked about purpose, identity, and the reality that every single person is made in the image of God. Maurice said he believed there could be a God who loves people, but he wrestled with one major question:
“If God is real, why does nobody want to talk about Him?”
Then Maurice did something that honestly challenged me. As we walked through Walmart together, he started asking random people, “Would you be willing to have a short conversation about God?”
Every single person said no.
It was eye-opening. Even when someone is willing to be vulnerable enough to ask spiritual questions, many people are too distracted, uncomfortable, or closed off to engage.
But moments like that remind me why Jesus’ words in the Beatitudes are so powerful. Often, it’s those who know they are desperate who are most open to hearing about hope. People who feel self-sufficient may believe they do not need God, but those who have experienced need understand dependence in a completely different way.
Before dropping Maurice off, I prayed with him and encouraged him to keep moving forward — to work hard, continue seeking God, and boldly share his faith with others.
Join me in praying for Maurice — that God would provide stability, purpose, and deeper faith as he begins rebuilding his life.
